With the warm weather upon us, it’s time to start thinking about your outdoor living space. Does your yard need more colour or visual interest?
Does it lack a focal point or decorative touches? Read on for some great tips on how you can give your outdoor space a facelift without breaking the bank.
Here are our top four outdoor décor tips, tricks and ideas to help you get started and truly fall back in love with your backyard space!
1. Add Focus With Lighting
Lighting is the ideal way to give your space a focal point. If you have a spa or a pool, making this the focus of your yard is a great idea. If you want a natural look, white LED rope lighting blends well with its surroundings when not in use but adds dramatic flare as soon as it’s turned on. If you want more impact, there are a variety of colours you can choose from to add some drama.
If you have a pool, floating lights add a lot of pizzazz to your space in the evenings. You can’t go wrong with colour customizable floating LED ball lights, which offer a soft glow that never hurts the eyes.
If you have a pergola or other structure surrounding your hot tub, hanging white twinkle lights will add a whimsical touch. Not only are they easy to hang, but they can make soaking in your spa at night a magical experience.
2. Updating Your Patio Furniture
If you’ve had your outdoor furniture for several years, you may think you need to buy a new set to give your deck or patio new life. If that’s not in the budget, however, don’t despair. There are a few easy and inexpensive ways to make your old set look new again.
Metal, iron or wicker furniture get an instant refresh with a few coats of spray paint. Start by giving the furniture a good wash and allow it to dry completely before painting. The good news is, this process can be done every year or as needed to keep your set looking beautiful.
Refreshing wooden furniture takes a little more work, but it’s worth the effort. Start by lightly sanding each piece before cleaning and drying it thoroughly. Carefully apply a fresh coat of stain and allow it to dry. Add extra coats as needed to achieve the desired hue.
Finally, buy some new cushions to add colour and interest to your outdoor space. Be sure to tie in the colours or patterns to the existing theme of your other pieces of outdoor décor!
3. Hanging Plants Add Colour
If you want to punch up your outdoor space with colour, hanging plants is a cheap and easy way to do that. Try hanging them from your deck or veranda. If you have a pergola over your spa or a wooden privacy screen, hang them there for an added pop of colour.
When choosing your blooms, opt for flowers that will spill out and over their containers such as wave petunias, verbena or impatiens. If you prefer greenery, opt for ivy or ferns.
4. Find Outdoor Décor with Personality
Nothing adds instant personality to an outdoor living space quite like wall art. You can head to the store or you can make your own. If you opt for DIY, find some old window frames of varying sizes and give them some colour with a good coat of spray paint.
You can choose multiple hues within the same colour family or complementary colours. You can group them together on the wall of your house or gazebo or on a backyard fence. You can also sand and stain a large old frame and, after hanging it, mount a summery wreath on top.
